Autumn was well into the month as howling blows of wind, sweeping the crumpled leaves whistled past curtained windows, barring out the world as a couple embraced in bed. Giggling under her breath, Ziggy leaned to her side and touched the warmth of the strange man’s, coloured nose with her bony index finger. Slightly opening her mouth to speak, when the man grabbed her forearm and dragged her towards his bare chest. The two playfully ended in giggles with soft whispers, kicking the light bed sheet over their bodies, for a morning kiss.
“Ziggy? Hello!” Snapped a hastened womanly voice, tugging Ziggy’s daydream to an end as she shook in bewilderment.
“Huh?” Ziggy’s eyes flickered and sat up in the car seat, “Oh, shit! I’m sorry, Zoe!”
“Damn girl, that’s the fourth time today I had to stop you from sleeping.” Keeping her eyes on the road as she drove on a wide road.
“Daydream…” Corrected Ziggy, yawning loudly and starred out the passenger seat window, watching a sea of sugarcane glide by every second, hiding the sunset in the distance.
“You can’t go drifting off like that or you’ll be cranky during the book convention.”
Ziggy glanced calmingly at her assistant, knowing if there was anyone to count on in this hectic day in her life, it had to been Zoe. “Was it the man again?”
Ziggy blushed, biting her lip and nodded “We were in bed together this time! I really think it’s a sign.” Flicking her plaited hair behind her. Zoe chuckled softly, shaking her head in amusement.
“Girl, it’s telling you go out there and find a man before you expire!” Grinned Zoe, watching Ziggy’s accusing eyes focus on her.
“Excuse me?!”
Zoe watched out for passing cars as she speeded uphill, turning a sharp corner, forcing Ziggy to crash against the window beside her. The two sat in moment silence with radio on soft in the background, Ziggy and Zoe closed in on the Writers Centre crowded with a heavy line up of fans readying to have the young writer’s autograph and listen in on her deep, sentimental conversations with hosts. Zoe parked behind the Centre, and slowly undid her seatbelt gazing out the afternoon sun.
“I hope we’re not too late.”
Ziggy picked up her leather jacket from the backseat and pulled it over herself, giving out a little smile. “They’re still here, so why would they be mad if we’re a bit late?”
“You sometimes loose the younger generation mind, Zig. People aren’t as patient as they used to be in our day.”
“For shits sake, Zoe! We’re only twenty-five!” Ziggy shook her head puzzled by the fact her age was considered ‘out of date’. Ziggy and Zoe gripped their bags, letting out a synchronised heavy sigh.
“Let’s get this over with!” Zoe pulled down her sunglasses, hiding her exhausted strained eyes. Ziggy followed her assistant through the backdoor, greeting the manager and hosts of the Writer’s Centre with a warm handshake and brief chat before heading onto stage, facing empty lined up rows of seats stacked.
She sucked on her water bottle contently, knowing by the end of the day she’ll probably have a raw throat from answering thousands of questions from her newly released novel ‘Wing-ow’, Ziggy enjoyed herself and indeed never wanted to change the way things were.
